OBSERVER IN
PALEMBANG MEET

PALEMBANG. The
Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic
Cooperation Member States(PUIC) has officially approved the request of
the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) for Observer
status of the MNLF-Bangsamoro People's Congress during the
plenary session of the 7th PUIC conference in Palembang,
Indonesia. The scheduled 2-day 7th PUIC meeting was held in Palembang, Indonesia,
from January 30-31, this year, under the auspices of
Indonesian President Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The
Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic
Cooperation is composed of all the Speakers and Parliamentary
Heads of all governments and observer communities and
organizations of the 57-nation Organization of Islamic
Cooperation (OIC).
The Executive
Committee of the PUIC, in its 26th Meeting held in Ankara,
Republic of Turkey on 20th November 2011 agreed to recommend
granting the Moro National Liberation Front Observer status
to the PUIC.
The
Bangsamoro People's Congress is the regular parliament
component body of the MNLF tasked to create policies
complementary with Islamic laws to regulate the affairs
of the MNLF members and the Bangsamoro masses. It is
composed of religious, political leaders and civilian
coordinators of the MNLF with the Bangsamoro people of
Mindanao under the chairmanship of Ustaj Habib Zain Jali,
a graduate of Islamic Jurisprudence of Al-Azhar
University, Cairo, Egypt.
The
opening session of the 7th PUIC conference included the
speeches of Prof. Mahmud Erol Kilic, PUIC Secretary
General and Dr. Marzuki Ali, Speaker of the House of
Representatives of Indonesia being Chairman of the
current auspicious PUIC meeting in Palembang. All the
representatives of the OIC member states, non-government
observers and OIC-affiliate organizations and agencies
were represented in the global conference. The delegates
heard the report of the PUIC Secretary General,
reviewing the PUOIC activities and participation in
parliamentary regional and international conferences,
and the implementing resolutions taken by the previous
PUIC conference in developing and modernizing PUIC
given works and tasks.
In the
plenary session, together with the approval of the Moro National Liberation
Front as Observer status, the pan-Islamic parliamentary
body also approved the membership of the People's
Council of Maldives, an OIC member state, as well as the
OIC Statistical, Economic and Social Research and
Training Centre and the Republic of Belarus. The plenary session of the 7th PUIC
positively approved the agenda and program of work of
all PUIC task committees.
The 2-day
7th PUIC conference ended with the respective addresses
by heads of delegations of the member-states, observers
and guests. It also approved the submitted reports of
all task committees for implementation and monitoring
discussion in the next PUIC meeting.
The PUIC
was established in 1999 with its permanent headquarters
in Tehran, Iran with the objective of providing a
framework for comprehensive cooperation and coordination
among the parliaments of OIC member countries. The PUIC
has four bodies: the Conference, the Council, the
Executive Committee and the General Secretariat.
